ARTIST STATEMENT

Being human encompasses not only our biology, but also who we are as individuals, shaped by our past and future. Through art, I want to convey how our experiences coalesce to form our identities. I am also fascinated by how human structure and form allow us to move beautifully. By exploring these areas, I seek to discover ways in which humans are similar yet distinct.

My artistic process begins by photographing human forms that serve as inspiration for sketches used to plan compositions. My primary mediums include pencil, charcoal, and pastel on paper, augmented with watercolor. I also use collage in which paper fragments unite like interconnected body systems, creating intricate images. Color palettes vary depending on theme. In “My Father’s Journey,” I showcase my dad’s military background with browns and greens of camouflage. In “Growing with Dance,” pieces of old dance notes not only provide visual depth and interest but also signify the importance of practice in my dance journey.

My work is largely realistic emphasizing expressive anatomy, like faces and hands, to provide clues regarding the individual’s character and emotions. In “Grasping History,” I drew hands and incorporated torn historical text to express our efforts to find unity despite our diverse cultures and backgrounds. In “Tranquility” my facial expression reflects the peace I feel when I am immersed in nature, significant of my own identity.

I am excited to continue to create as I learn additional techniques gaining inspiration and experience in biological sciences and medical humanities.
